Pottery Barn Children’s Water Bottles Recalled Because of Lead Paint Danger

Pottery Barn has recalled more than 15,000 children’s water bottles it sold from June 2014 to September 2015 because the paint on the metal portion of the water bottle can contain excessive levels of lead, violating federal lead paint standards.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on its web site. About 15,200 of the stainless steel water bottles were recalled in the U.S. and about 430 in Canada.

The stainless steel water bottles are painted with images of Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man on one style, and an image of Darth Vader and the Death Star on the other style. The water bottles are gray with a blue or black plastic top, a vacuum-valve stopper. The bottles are 5 ½ inches tall by 2 ¾ inches in diameter. SKU number 7939721 (Avengers) or 7939721 (Darth Vader) is printed on the price sticker affixed to the bottom of the bottle, along with one of the following date codes: 12/2013, 8/2014 or 12/2014. A tracking label affixed to the underside of the bottle contains the date code along with the words, “Pottery Barn Kids,” “LOT 1, BATCH 1” and “JINHUA, CHINA.”

The bottles were sold from June 2014 to September 2015 at Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Outlet stores nationwide, and through the Pottery Barn Kids catalog and online at www.potterybarnkids.com. The price was about $16, according to the CPSC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that lead exposure can affect nearly every system in the body, and no safe blood lead level in children has been identified. Because lead exposure often occurs with no obvious symptoms, it frequently goes unrecognized. Thus far, no injuries have been reported in children using the Pottery Barn water bottles.

The CPSC advises consumers to make sure their children immediately stop using the recalled water bottles. The bottles can be returned to the nearest Pottery Barn Kids store or consumers can call Pottery Barn’s toll-free number for free shipping information. Consumers will have the option of a full refund or a replacement water bottle, plus a $20 Pottery Barn Kids gift card.
