Approximately 1.7 million Drill Master 18-Volt Cordless Drills have been recalled because they can overheat and pose fire and burn hazards.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) explains that an internal switching mechanism in the drill can become stuck in the “on” position, causing the drill to overheat. The CPSC said Harbor Freight Tools has received 25 reports of the drill overheating. Six users have reported burns to the hand or fingers, and five reports describe minor property damage.
The recalled Drill Master 18-volt cordless drills are item numbers 68239 and 68287. The drills are black with a red switch. Each drill was sold with an 18-volt rechargeable battery pack. The item 68239 drill was sold individually; the item 68287 drill came in a kit that included a flashlight. (The flashlight is not affected by the recall.) The drill’s item number is printed on a black label on the right side of the drill, just beneath the serial number. The drills were made in China and imported by Harbor Freight Tolls. The recalled drills were were sold nationwide between May 2011 and September 2015 at Harbor Freight Tools stores, through the Harbor Freight Tools catalog, and online at www.harborfreight.com. Item 68239 sold for about $35 and for item number 68287 for $46.
To avoid the risk of injury and fire, the CPSC advises consumers to stop using the recalled drills and return them to Harbor Freight Tools for a replacement.
