Tate’s Bake Shop of Southampton, New has York has recalled its Tate’s 7 oz. Chocolate Chip Cookies and Tate’s 7 oz. Gluten Free Ginger Zinger Cookies because these two varieties contain undeclared walnuts, an allergen.
The 7 oz. packages of Tate’s Chocolate Chip Cookies have a Best By date of Mar 20, 2016 and the 7 oz. packages of Tate’s Gluten Free Ginger Zinger Cookies have a Best By date of Jan 04, 2016. Both cookie varieties are sold nationwide at retail stores. Tate’s initiated the recall after discovering that cookies containing walnuts were distributed in packaging that did not indicate that they contain walnuts.
Individuals who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts risk serious allergic reactions if they consume the Tate’s cookies, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains.
The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says symptoms of tree nut allergy include
- Abdominal pain, cramps, nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Difficulty swallowing
- Itching of the mouth, throat, eyes, skin or any other area
- Nasal congestion or a runny nose
- Shortness of breath.
- Anaphylaxis (severe, possibly life-threatening, allergic reaction)
The FDA said no illnesses linked to the Tate’s cookies have been reported to date.
The recall announcement on the FDA web site says consumers can identify the affected packaged by the Best By dates printed on the bottom of the outer package: Tate’s 7 oz. Chocolate Chip Cookies have a Best By date of Mar 20, 2016 and Tate’s 7 oz. Gluten Free Ginger Zinger have a Best By date of Jan 04 2016. Pictures of the Tate’s cookie packages are included in the recall notice on the FDA web site.
The company advises consumers who have purchased the two affected Tate’s cookie varieties to return the cookies to the place of purchase for a full refund.
