Whole Foods Recalls Papillon Organic Roquefort Cheese for Possible Listeria Contamination

Whole Foods Market has announced the recall of Papillon Organic Roquefort cheese sold in its stores because the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections “in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In rare instances, persons outside these high-risk groups can also be seriously affected. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that the risk may be reduced by following recommendations for safe food preparation, consumption, and storage.

The symptoms of listeria infection include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Healthy individuals usually suffer only short-term symptoms but the listeria bacteria can cause serious illness, even fatal infections, in higher risk individuals. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths. The CDC advises anyone who develops symptoms of listeria infection to seek immediate medical attention.

According to the recall announcement posted by the FDA, the recalled cheese was cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap and labeled with the Whole Foods Market scale labels. Whole Foods Market decided to recall the cheese after routine sampling by the FDA found Listeria monocytogenes in a whole, uncut wheel of the Papillon Organic Roquefort cheese. The Papillon cheese can be identified by the scale label that begins with PLU 029536. All sell by dates of the cheese are included in the recall.

Whole Foods says that, to date, no illnesses or infections have been reported. All Whole Foods stores have posted signs on store shelves to notify customers of the cheese recall. All affected cheese has been removed from store shelves, the FDA reports.

Consumers who purchased the affected cheese from Whole Foods stores may bring their receipt to the store for a full refund. Consumers who have questions about the recall may contact their local Whole Foods store or call 512-477-5566 ext. 20060 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
