The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced that children’s water bottles sold at Target are being recalled because a portion of the straw can break, creating a choking hazard for the child.
The 10-inch tall Zak Designs water bottles have a flip-top spout on a twist-off cap with inner plastic straws in clear, blue, gray, green, light purple or red. In the recalled bottles, the inner plastic straw in the flip-top portion of the twist-off cap can break, posing a choking hazard. About 178,000 bottles were recalled.
The CPSC says Zak Designs has received nine reports of the inner straw in the flip-top portion of the cap breaking. In seven of the reports, the child using the bottle spit out plastic fragments, though no injuries have been reported. The CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and contact Zak Designs for instructions on obtaining a free replacement cap with straw.
Target was the exclusive seller of the water bottles. The bottles were sold in June and July 2015 in a “Back-to-College” promotion and were priced around $10.
The bottles come in clear, gray, navy blue, pink, teal blue, and gray, with caps in red, blue, pink and yellow. The bottles have popular characters on the front including Captain America, My Little Pony, a Batman design, Minions, Star Wars aircraft, a Superman logo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spiderman, Thor and Wonder Woman. Mold number 14158 and Zak Designs trademark are embossed on the bottom of the bottles. According to the CPSC, Zak Designs bottles with a black inner straw and black twist-off cap are not included in the recall.
The recall was announced on September 17, 2015.
