On Saturday, Vice President Joe Biden lost his son, 46-year-old Joseph “Beau” Biden, to brain cancer. Scientists are not certain what causes brain tumors to form, but studies have found an association between brain cancer and cell phone use.
Beau Biden was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme, or GBM, which is aggressive and often fatal. Two-year-survival estimates only linger around 17 percent for patients between the ages of 40 and 65 years old, according to The Daily Beast. Many scientists believe that there are various environmental risk factors, including cell phone radiation, which the World Health Organization (WHO) calls “possibly carcinogenic.”
A Swedish study published last fall in the International Journal of Oncology found that individuals who used a cell phone for more than 25 years had 300 times the cancer risk as individuals who used a cell phone for one year or less. Individuals who used cell phones for more than a year had a 70 percent higher risk of brain cancer than those who used the devices for less than a year. “Glioma and also acoustic neuromas are caused by RF-EMF emissions from wireless phones,” researchers wrote. The study also found that those who started using cell phones before the age of 20 had a greater risk of brain cancer.
“Doctors should be very concerned by this and discuss precautions with their patients,” study author Lennart Hardell, MD, PhD, professor, Department of Oncology, University Hospital, Örebro, Sweden, told Medscape.
In Canada, a committee comprised of members from all political parties are working on a report which could make suggestions for lowering cancer risk that may be caused by cell phone radiation. Although both cell phones and cell phone towers in that country are required to meet regulatory requirements that limit electromagnetic radio-frequency (RF) waves, the committee is reconsidering those limits. An April 2014 report found that current guidelines were adequate, but recommended further research into a potential link between RF and cancer, particularly in children. Many experts fear that years of cell phone use may contribute to the disease, as cancer takes years to develop and it may be decades before scientists grasp the full scope of the danger, Newsmax reported.
